Fences 101: 3 Essential Maintenance Tasks For Wrought Iron Fences

A wrought iron fence is a beautiful addition to any home. However, unlike many other fences, wrought iron fences require routine maintenance and cleaning in order to maintain their beauty. Luckily, this isn't too difficult – and you can likely do it yourself. So what kind of maintenance and cleaning should you be performing on your iron fence and gate? Here are three essentials.

1. Apply Paint or Wax

It might sound odd, but applying paint to your wrought iron fence is essential. You do not have to paint it a bright or obscure color, but you do need to paint it. A coat of paint will help provide a barrier between the iron fence and the elements. Air and water are deadly for iron, as they both cause it to rust. So make sure you inspect your fence regularly and apply fresh paint when needed.

If you are against the idea of painting your fence, you should at the very least apply a coating of wax. Ideal for wrought iron fences and gates, wax can also help prevent rusting. However, you will need to apply wax more often than you would paint. So keep this in mind.

2. Clean It Regularly

You should also make sure that you are cleaning your fence regularly. Dirt and debris buildup can cause your fence to rust, even with protective coatings. When cleaning your fence, use warm water. If you need more cleaning power, use a gentle detergent or a toothbrush. If you do use any cleansers, make sure you rinse the fence thoroughly. Finally, let it air dry and apply a fresh coating of wax for added protection.

3. Address Rust Spots Quickly

If your fence has rust spots, tend to them quickly. Once rust has developed in one spot, it can easily spread. Because of this, it's important that you repair rust spots immediately. To remove rust, use sandpaper. Sand the spot until the rust is completely gone. When the rust is gone, rinse and apply a fresh coat of protective wax.

If you notice large areas of rust, you may need to contact a fencing contractor. These professionals can assess the damage and perform repairs. If the area is too large, you need to replace a portion of the fence – and a fencing contractor can do that, too.

Wrought iron fences and gates are sophisticated and beautiful. However, they do require a lot of upkeep. If you have an iron fence, make sure you are performing these tasks regularly to keep your fence healthy and attractive. If you need further help, a fencing contractor can assist you.
